BEN DAVIS CLAIMS THEIR SECOND STRAIGHT STATE TRACK TITLE

6/6/2009

A year after claiming the school’s first ever boys state championship title, Ben Davis made it a repeat performance by winning their second straight championship title at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex in Bloomington.  In the 106th annual event, the Giants finished with 57 points, followed by second place Warren Central who tallied 33 points.  Bloomington South and Northridge tied for third with 27 points.  Ben Davis was led by head coach Mike Davidson.

Ben Davis senior Matthew Terrell earned valuable points for the Giants with his third straight state title in the 200 meter dash and his first title in the 100 meter dash.  In the 200, Terrell posted a time of 21.29 to go along with his 100 meter dash time of 10.47.  He also anchored the 400 meter relay team of freshman Jerobaum Wilson, senior Colin Hester, and junior Anthony Kimmons to a winning finish of 41.17.  The 1600 meter relay team comprised of junior Anthony Kimmons, sophomore DeQuan Ruth, sophomore Casey Rice, and junior Robert Rose, secured the victory with their winning time of 3:17.15 in the evening’s final event.

Senior Corey Shank of Fort Wayne Northrop earned his third straight state title in the Pole Vault with a 16-3 clearance.  In an effort to best his own state record of 17-0 (set in 2007), Shank failed to clear 17-1 on his third attempt.  He becomes just the third pole-vaulter in IHSAA history to win the event three times.

Derrick Spight of Warren Central cleared 7-0 to take his second straight state final in high jump.

Carmel’s 3200 meter relay team of senior Daniel Kinn, junior Daniel Porter, senior Logan Rosenberg, and sophomore Chris Walden just missed the state meet record of 7:41.56 set by Indianapolis Bishop Chatard in 2006, finishing with a winning time of 7:41.79.

Nicholas Banke won his first state title in discus with a throw of 179-2; a first for Mishawaka in the event.  South Bend Adams senior Logan Griffith finished first in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 14.07.

Fort Wayne North Side senior Aris Allen threw 58-6 to claim his first state title in shot put.  Columbus East senior Duwyce Wilson leaped 22-10.5 to take the state title in long jump.

In the 800 meter run, Bloomington South senior Joe Holahan finished with a winning time of 1:52.26 to claim his first state title.
