Northwestern’s boys golf team turned in a score of 169 to beat Eastern by 30 strokes Wednesday at Green Acres G.C.
The Tigers were led by their 1-2 punch of Ben-Marvin Egel and Drew Hansen. Egel won medalist honors with a 2-over 38 and Hansen followed with a 39.
Jeff Blankenberger (44) and Curtis Bretl (48) had the Tigers’ third and fourth scores and Jack Florea (50) and Zach Gabriel (51) rounded out their varsity lineup for Wednesday’s match.
“The Tigers are slowly improving and hopefully by [Mid-Indiana Conference tournament] time, we’ll be ready to show our true colors,” Northwestern coach Randy Lindgren said.
Lindgren is looking for a regular lineup to emerge.
“It’s kind of like we’re playing musical chairs. I have my 1 and 2 [spots] set and my [next seven players] all kind of just switch places. I need to be the musician to figure it out,” Lindgren said.
Noel Horvath fired a 39 for the Comets, but the Greentown gang failed to back Horvath’s score with other solid scores. The Comets’ second- and third-best scores were 50s from Scott Bolinger and Micah Detweiler.

Ben Meadows fired a 41 to win medalist honors and lead the Titans to the win at Fox Prairie G.C. John Fantuzzo (46), James Fantuzzo (47) and Andrew Shively (49) had the Titans’ other top scores.
“We’re hanging on with our scores right where we’ve been — much better than last year,” Taylor coach Frank Conner said. “We’re having a good time. I’d just like to see the scores just kind of turn down a little bit more. We’re just wanting to improve a little bit.”
