MUNCIE — Any volleyball coach would love to have one player from its program win the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award.

Fairfield coach Carla Herschberger has doubled her pleasure in a very personal and unique way with a pair of recipients in the last three years.

Herschberger has seen not one, but two of her daughters earn the honor. Fairfield senior Courtney Herschberger claimed the award for Class 2-A Saturday at Ball State University. She joins sister Kelsey, who won the honor in 2006.

"We're just really proud of them,'' said coach Herschberger Sunday. "Both of them were really hard workers and good leaders. They are well-rounded people and that's really important to us (myself and husband Kirby). If we would have made it to State, my other two daughters (Mandy and Brittany) would have been great candidates too.''

"We talk to our players about being role models in everything they do. That's important to us.''

Courtney Herschberger led the No. 3 Falcons to the Class 2-A state finals for the third straight season. Fairfield lost 3-0 in the semifinals to No. 1 Muncie Burris, which went on to win its 12th straight 2-A state title. Courtney, a 5-6 outside hitter, led her team in kills on the season and on Saturday. She carries a 3.962 GPA and has been elected class president in her sophomore, junior and senior years. Herschberger, who is undecided on college, also plays basketball and softball.

Coach Herschberger loses six seniors, including her third daughter to play for her at Fairfield. Older sisters Kelsey and Brittany both now play for Goshen College. The Falcons are 102-15 the past three years and won a program-best 36 matches this fall.

"I plan to be back next year,'' said Herschberger. "The kids here are great and mean a lot to me. It's tough to build a program and then leave. I had fun coaching my daughters, but I also had fun at Westview when I wasn't coaching them.

"We lose five starters so it will be a challenge and we'll have some building to do. But our JV team was undefeated this year and we have some possibilities.''

Troyers provide spark

Elkhart Memorial got a boost from two fresh faces Saturday.

Twin sisters Krystle and Amanda Troyer stepped up in give the No. 4 Chargers a spark in a 3-1 loss to No. 1 Cathedral in the Class 4-A state semifinals.

"They make things happen,'' said Memorial coach Jacquie Rost on her decision to play the Troyers. "I thought we needed to mix it up. They're quick and never hesitate. We were on our heels and I thought they helped against that.''

The pair of juniors had played in just one game each in the postseason before getting considerable playing time Saturday. The duo had played JV all regular season due to an IHSAA ruling after they had transferred from Mishawaka. The ruling was challenged in court and an agreement was reached to allow the Troyers to play in the state tourney.

The Troyers, including sophomore Melanie, should all be key players for EMHS in 2009. The Chargers lose a stellar senior class of seven. A pair of those standouts, setter Lindsay Marks and libero Amy Oldenburg, caught the eye of Cathedral coach Jean Kesterson Saturday.
