Orioles fall in regionals

GREENWOOD — The Avon girl’s volleyball team was defeated by Cathedral in the opening round of regionals 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 on Saturday at Center Grove.

“We have some good girls on our team,” Avon coach Scott McQueen said. “We probably made some mistakes coaching-wise in things that we tried to do offensively. I thought they did a great job against (Cathedral) defensively. Cathedral’s got a great block and it took us out of our game at times. That was disappointing, but our kids are great. It shouldn’t take anything away from a fantastic season — one of the best in Avon history. I’m proud of the girls and just obviously disappointed in the results.”

The Orioles (34-2) got off to a slow start and fell behind 20-12 in the first game en route to a 25-15 defeat.

In the second game, Cathedral (34-2) continued its momentum to take a 17-6 advantage. With the score 21-10 in favor of the Irish, Avon made a run. The Orioles outscored Cathedral 6-1 over the next seven points. However, Cathedral took the next three points and took the game 25-16.

After another slow start in the third game, Avon battled back to take only their second lead of the match at 10-9. Despite this momentum, the Irish outscored the Orioles 16-5 during the duration of the game and took the match 3-0.

Ashley Francis led the way for Avon with six kills and two blocks. Katie Griffin added six kills, while Morgan Lemkuhl contributed five kills and an ace.

Christiana Gray led the way for Cathedral with 11 kills and three blocks.

For the Irish, the victory could have been a sample of retribution as Avon ended their season last year in regionals.

Despite the loss, McQueen realizes that his squad had a fantastic season. He thinks that the challenge of the state tournament is what makes the competition enjoyable.

“(This season) was great,” McQueen said. “The kids work hard, they play hard, and they practice hard. We played Cathedral in regionals. We beat a lot of other teams. We beat Elkhart Memorial this year. That’s why the postseason is so much fun, because it’s so disappointing when you lose. That’s how it goes sometimes.”

The end of the season marks the end of a career for six talented seniors for the Orioles. The Avon seniors are Perrie Morgan, Holly Wasmund, Ashley Francis, Amanda Smith, Kelly Templeton and Katie Griffin. McQueen knows that these seniors will be difficult to replace.

“Fantastic group (of seniors),” McQueen said. “Probably one of the best senior classes I’ve ever had. (The underclassmen) have some tough shoes to fill, but we’ll be back at it next year. Probably take some people by surprise and do a great job.”

With losing the group of seniors, McQueen knows that Avon must rebuild and develop a new group for next season.

“It’s going to be a different year,” McQueen said. “Obviously we lose a big part of our offense, as well as a big part of our defense with the six kids that we graduate. That’s part of high school volleyball — you graduate kids. We’ve had some great kids who competed all year during practice and did a great job. (Freshman Katie) Higginbotham came in and took some nice swings at the end. It’ll be a different year next year. We just have to learn and get better and improve to get ready for next year.”
