Marquette tested, wins in three

FULTON -- If Marquette needed to be tested to get ready for the rest of the IHSAA tournament, the Blazers certainly got what they needed in the championship match of the Class A Caston Regional.

As usual, Marquette (34-4) took just three game to beat Elkhart Christian.

But it was not usual in how the Blazers did it. The Eagles pushed the top-ranked Blazers hard before falling 25-22, 25-20 and 25-14.

"It was great to have an energy-filled match," Blazers coach Troy Campbell said. "I think (Elkhart Central) played very well. They did what they could with Ashley (Edmund.)"

Campbell was pleased how sophomore Katie Clancy responded to the responsibility of bolstering the front line against Elkhart's defensive tactics.

"To see her on this stage step in that role of one of the three big hitters is fantastic," he said. "Clancy really came through today. Nine kills, and her serving, too."

Elkhart did a good job of limiting and turning around the Blazers' service. Clancy helped in that area, where the Blazers are usually dominant.

For Amber Cerrillos, it was a special day.

"Amber had her best serving day ever," Campbell said of his standout junior. "She had just two toal errors all day, and served 18 aces. At this level of the tournament, that is sensational. As you move up, you tend to tail off, the teams are so much better. Today she was fabulous."

In some ways, Elkhart's good play helped the Blazers. Several times, Elkhart took the lead, or pushed into a tie, not something that Marquette is used to seeing.

"It showed the girls that every time you have to come to play with confidence, especially when you have to come back," Campbell said. "It gave our role players a chance to produce, and Amber has that confidence in big time situations."

Campbell liked the way his players got into the game as the team neared the championship.

"These girls work very, very hard, and to have it pay off, and to let out the emotion is great," he said.
