Tri-West Bruins reload after successful season

LIZTON — The Tri-West girls’ soccer team was set on winning the program’s first conference title in 2007. The team left nothing to chance, went a perfect 7-0 in the Sagamore Conference, and took home the championship.

The Bruins were 11-3-3 overall and hope to emulate last year’s successes in 2008, having lost just one starter from their roster.

“There are definitely high expectations this year,” Tri-West coach Jeff Sloan said. “We have a big upperclass. Basically there are a dozen seniors and every one of them either starts or has plenty of experience to draw from. It’s my 10th year as coach and I’ve never had this large a group of seniors.”

Leading that senior class will be forward Kylee Bennett, who was the team’s MVP in 2007, compiling 12 goals and 11 assists. Bennett became the program’s all-time assist leader with 39 for her career.

Bennett is joined by her sister, Megan, who enters her junior season. Megan Bennett — also a forward — scored 15 goals and dished out seven assists for the Bruins last year.

“They intermix, when they go out there I don’t even tell them to play the left or right side — there’s great communication going on there and they carry it on to the rest of the team,” Sloan said. “It’s a powerful thing.”

Seniors Eileen Buss and Abby Kahl will help control the Bruins’ midfield and add to the team’s offensive attack. The two combined for 10 goals and seven assists last season.

The defense will be spearheaded by a trio of experienced seniors — Sara Blair, Derra Allor, and Kara Brothers.

Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Poyner and junior Emily Devore will likely split time in the net.

After their successful regular season, the Bruins got a tough draw in last season’s sectional tournament, and fell to Avon 5-0 in the opening match.

“The girls took it well, they understand we’re drawing from 400 kids and they’re (big schools) drawing from about 1,400,” Sloan said. “There were years in the past where they practically pulled the mercy rule — now we give them a good game.”

Sloan will have to leave the team for a portion of this month as his daughter, Bridget Sloan, is a member of the USA Olympic Gymnastics team and will compete in the Summer Olympics. Sloan and his family recently departed for Beijing.

The Bruins get their season started Aug. 19 at Greencastle.

“There aren’t too many new faces on this team,” Sloan said. “Most of these players have been playing since youth leagues right on through. I can say this is my most experienced team.”
