With one player still on the course, the results of the Midwest Classic at Skyland Pines in Canton, Ohio on Saturday remained in doubt.
Members of the Martinsville High School girls’ golf team anxiously waited for sophomore Jaclyn Schindler to finish up her round. Her score would determine whether or not the Artesians repeated as tournament champions.
Without her score, Martinsville would have finished three strokes short. Avon High School, because their players were finished and their scores posted, finished with a 326. Martinsville’s score, at that point, was 329.
Most said she knew Schindler had played well on the first 9-holes, and knew she played well on the first few holes of the back-9. But she didn’t know her 18-hole total, leaving her and her team waiting and hoping.
When one of the Martinsville parents ran up to coach Sharon Most and said Schindler shot an 80, Most knew what that meant — Martinsville was once again Midwest Classic champions. Those results meant Martinsville shot a 321.
“These young ladies have really stepped up ‘to the tee’ and taken their practice work to the course,” Most said. “I am very impressed with our performance to this point; however, we must keep everything in perspective.”
Kelsey Benson led the Artesians’ with a 77, good for fourth place in the 85-player field. Carleigh Silvers, shooting a 78, finished in sixth. Nina Jackson posted an 86 and Shelby Wilson an 88. Two other Arties played a practice round — Kelcy Kiseroad shot an 86 and Katherine Habbel an 89.
“I don’t think most people would have ranked us No. 1 in the coaches’ poll this early in the season, including me,” Most said. “I am never too interested in that type of statistic; I am more interested in the finish at the state tournament. We still have some rough edges that I would like to see improved, but without a doubt we are very competitive, and I like the improvements we have made so far.”
Walsh Jesuit finished in third place with a 328 total. Avon’s Breana Patz was low medalist, shooting a 2-over par 74.
