Led by Kelsey Benson’s 38, the Martinsville High School girls’ golf team won Wednesday for the seventh time in a row, beating Mooresville, 161-199 at Foxcliff Golf Club.
Benson’s two over par gave her low medalist honors, and she was closely followed by teammate Carleigh Silvers, who shot a 39.
Other scores for Martinsville were Jaclyn Schindler’s 41, Kelcy Diceroad’s 43, Molly English’s 43, Nina Jackson’s 44, Shelby Wilson’s 44, Mariah Walker’s 45 and Katherine Habbel’s 47. Both schools played nine players and counted the best four out of five scores.
Coach Sharon Most called it a “nice accomplishment” for her entire team to shoot in the 40s.
“I am extremely proud of these young ladies; they are working hard for this season and building for next season as well,” she said. “We are pleasantly surprised with our current ranking and achievements so far.”
Martinsville plays Franklin and Bloomington High School North at 4:30 p.m. today at Cascades Golf Course in Bloomington, but Most was looking down the road to the Hall of Fame tournament on Aug. 30 in Richmond.
“Everyone needs to step it up because of the tough competition we will be facing in the Hall of Fame tournament that will be coming up,” she said. “We will be focusing on our ability to improve our scores through better course management as we work over the next few weeks.”
