Kotso eager to shoulder the load

Allyse Kotso isn't sure how well this season is going to go for her.

She wishes she could be more positive about her outlook.

But she has a cranky back that acts up because she had a bad shoulder that was surgically repaired last fall.

Her unpredictable back combined with a relative lack of playing time this offseason has Kotso both nervous and excited.

"I'm defintely excited about the season," she said. "I have the potential to be very good. I'm also apprehensive about it because I know I have the potential to blow up."

Kotso, the first girl from Chesterton ever to qualify for the second day of the state finals, did it last year with a sore shoulder.

In November, exploratory surgery revealed that she had some some genetic problems with the tendons in her shoulder. Surgery fixed that problem but she didn't get back to practice until last April.

Kotso believes the lack of time on the course has weakend her back.

She said back pain in her right side has "limited" her play. Kotso has visited doctors, who haven't been able to figure out what the problem is.

According to Kotso, the "good news is I'm consistently in the low 80s. The bad news is I'm consistently in the low 80s."

Kotso is hopeful that she'll get help at the top of the order.

Erin Devaney, the Trojans' No. 2 player, has had a good summer.

The No. 2 singles player for the Trojans' tennis team, Devaney still calls golf her favorite sport. She has mostly been a mid- to high-40s scorer for the Trojans in her career.

Chesterton coach Dale Hewitt is hoping that changes this year.

"She has worked hard," Hewitt said. "Frankly, we've been waiting for her to step up to the next level. This could be the year. She has the potential to be down in the low 80s."

Devaney's best moment came last year when she shot a 91 at the Valparaiso Sectional.

One of her lowest moments came the next week when she shot a score she wants to forget at the LaPorte Regional.

Her goal for the year is to make it to "state as a team and stay in the low-80s for the whole season and make all-conference."
