Martinsville golf wins tourney thanks to fifth score

The Martinsville High School girls golf team won another close tournament Monday, winning the Center Grove Tournament.

Despite tying with Avon by shooting 315, Martinsville won by virtue of its fifth score (an 85, carded by Nina Jackson, which was one stroke better than Avon’s). Hamilton Southeastern finished in third-place, three strokes behind, and Carmel and Richmond tied for fourth, scoring a 320. Twenty-one schools competed in the tournament.

“These scores are representative of what we may see at the state tournament,” coach Sharon Most said. “There are a number of schools that have a possibility of being a state winner. This match was too close for comfort for the Lady Arties.”

Carleigh Silvers led Martinsville with a 73, giving her a sixth-place individual finish, and Kelsey Benson tied for eighth with a 76.

Shelby Wilson shot an 82 and Jaclyn Schindler, playing in the top five for the first time this season, shot an 84.

“Our lineup has changed at various outings as opportunities are given to several different players,” Most said. “Scores from JV matches will be important as well when the team travels to Harrison Lake on Wednesday.”

Taylor Gohn of Columbus North was low medalist in the field with a 68.

The Artesians play at 10 a.m. today at Prestwick Country Club against Avon.

On Saturday, Martinsville competes in the Midwest Classic in Canton, Ohio, with a shotgun start at 1:45 p.m.

“We are gaining experience by facing tough challenges,” Most said.
