Lady Pirates win sectional

Greensburg leads a trio of Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference teams that advanced out of the Greensburg sectional to next week’s regional at Franklin Central. North Decatur finished fifth on the day.

The Cougars could only field three girls and took an incomplete score.

The Lady Pirates placed their top four golfers in the first seven places to finish with a team score of 341 to easily out-distance Batesville and South Dearborn who carded scores of 404 and 407, respectively.

Leading the way for the Pirates was meet medalist Megan Gindling. Playing in her final sectional tournament, she carded an 80 to defeat teammate Brianna Scheidler by two strokes. Placing third was Laiken Davis of South Ripley who scored an 84.

Following the two top Pirates were Kasey Kilgore whose 88 was the fifth best score of the day and Hillary Miller who carded 91. Kilgore bounced back from an horrendous first hole in which she scored an 11 to card pars on her next three holes. Ultimately she finished in the top five for the day.

“I’m not particularly happy with the scores,” said Coach Phyllis Hamilton. “We will have to be near 330 to advance from the regional, but everyone had problems today. The pin placement on 11 was tricky and the greens were fast. We’ve just go to concentrate more.”

Jac-Cen-Del’s Kristen Hicks finished fourth individually with an 86. Rounding out the top 10 individual scores were Tara Tiettmeyer, South Dearborn 89; Miller and Katelyn Soper, South Dearborn, with 91 each; Sarah Sunderman, Lawrenceburg, 93 and B. Bedel, Batesville 94.

Davis, Hicks and Sunderman all advance to next week’s regional as the three lowest scorers from non-qualifying teams.

The Chargers were led by Tara Lecher with a 97. She was followed by Katie Gahimer 103; Whitney Beard 105; Abby Stewart 115 and LeAnn Power 120.

“It was a little disappointing to finish where we did, but our girls did their best,” said Chargers coach Dan Borns. “I wish the best of luck to the teams that made it to regional, and would like to say that I am very proud of the girls' efforts this year.”

Kyra Domingo hit 100 for Greensburg while South Decatur was led by Erica Bewley with 126, Danielle Wenning 140 and Cheyenne Scranton 147.
