The Greensburg Pirates boys’ cross-country team opens their season on Thursday August 21st at 4:30 at South Decatur against the Batesville Bulldogs and the meet-hosting Cougars. The Pirates return eight harriers from last years’ team, which won the Decatur County meet for the sixth year in a row and qualified for the regional meet for the fifth year in a row.
Jesse Herbert (captain), Rick Wininger and Jason Matlock are seasoned seniors and Colt Hyatt and Zack Powell are back for their junior years and Ian Frink, Adam Swinford and Christian Fox are sophomores that ran last season. Two new additions to the 2008 team are sophomore Adrian Shellabarger and freshman Ethan Loechle.
The Pirates will be lead by Frink and Powell. Frink was all-EIAC and all-sectional last year as a freshman, and both he and Powell have put in a lot of quality miles this summer.
“Both runners should have great seasons,” according to Coach Davis. “Most of the kids have been running since June and are ready for our first meet. We have an experienced group of kids that should compete for the conference and sectional titles this year.”
The Greensburg girls’ cross-country team has three returning runners and three new faces out for the 2008 season. Senior captain Taryn Owens and juniors Brianna Parsons and Gina Ricke will provide the leadership and experience for the squad. They will be joined by juniors Jenn Meadows and Hayley Schwering and sophomore Ashley Meredith.
Taryn Owens is the only senior on the team She has been all-conference and all-sectional in each of the last three seasons. Brianna Parsons has also earned all-EIAC honors for the last two years in cross-country. Taryn, Brianna, and Gina all broke the 22 minute mark for 5000m last year.
“The girls have been working really hard and getting better every practice,” noted Coach Davis. “We’re looking forward to competing in our first meet in a couple of weeks.”
