ST JOHN -- John Gore showed up to practice on Monday 30 minutes late and upon his arrival was named the starting goalkeeper against the area's preseason No.1 team that made it to semistate last year.
It wouldn't be such a big deal, but Gore hadn't played goalie in over three years and was making his debut at the varsity level against a team that the program hadn't beat in seven years.
With the bad taste still lingering in his mouth after how his season ended last year and after sarcastic, yet motivation-packed words from his father, Gore showed up with ice in his veins on Tuesday. He played like a veteran at the position as Andrean defeated Lake Central 2-1 behind a makeshift lineup that head coach Pete Reist threw together.
When it was all said and done, only two subs remained prior to the final whistle as the 59ers walked away with a season opening victory on the road.
"We were hurt coming in and we played that whole second half with only two substitutions," said Reist. "But man we found out that we have a big heart."
Marcos Perez with only 4:09 drilled a shot off the clock in the first half on an assist from Kyle Otte to put Andrean (1-0) ahead 1-0, giving his team a huge momentum advantage after the LC defense suffered a breakdown to allow the goal.
The 59ers sustained the momentum heading into halftime to keep the score the same.
A frustrated Indian squad had difficulty finding the back of the net in the first half and that same frustration carried over to the second half as balls went either too wide or too high around the goal.
Gore did his part by defending two shots from within mere feet of the goal that he instinctively deflected. Both shots were within the 20-minute mark of the game, two minutes apart and had every right to go in.
"I was so jacked up after the first save," Gore said. "It felt like I was on the highest mountain."
Ironically enough, Lake Central coach Jereme Rainwater felt like a mountain was in the way of his team scoring goals all night long.
"It was a little difficult, but that's a tribute to them and they did an outstanding job," Rainwater said about the scoring opportunities that came up short. "After falling behind, we were forced to put something in the back of the net, and we didn't do it."
With school starting today, Lake Central (0-1) learned a great lesson one-day prior according to Rainwater.
"If anything, (Andrean) taught us how to play with our hearts and hopefully we can learn that lesson and go forward," he said.
In another defensive mishap late in the second half with 11:47 to play, Andrean's Joe Krilich took a breakaway down the sideline and found Tony Arvin, after some skillful dribbling, waiting in front of the net to make it 2-0 with a one-time shot.
Lake Central's Geoffrey Bowman scored the only goal for his team via a rebound off the right goal post that found its way back to him as he lingered around the front of the net.
