Mt. Vernon (Fortville) drops conference rival Pendleton

Pendleton Hts. missed an opportunity to move toward an uncontested HHC championship this season when they lost to host Mt.Vernon on Thursday.

Mt. Vernon scored twice in the first half, once on a penalty kick due to a called foul against PHHS in the box (restricted area), and again later in the half on an uncharacteristic Arabian defensive letdown.

"We still need to put together a complete 80 minutes of soccer," said PHHS coach Dave Cooper. "We fell behind 2-0 from mistakes that shouldn't happen."

"I give credit to a good Mt. Vernon team and I'm proud that we responded and played a well in the second half."

The 2nd half was a stalemate but the damage had been done and now PHHS, 9-4-1, has to win their last two matches, against conference teams Shelbyville (away Tuesday Sept. 30) and New Palestine (home, Senior night Thursday Oct. 2nd), to become co-champs of the conference.

In conference play Mt.Vernon is now 6-1, New Palestine 5-1, and Pendleton is 4-1.

Gage Martin, coming off an injury causing him to miss two matches, played well making saves on 7 of Mt.Vernon’s 11 attempts. PHHS manufactured feasible opportunities and had 7 shots on goal, but simply couldn’t get the ball inside the net.
