Bulldogs lose to Greensburg in football

In the end, the Bulldog may have scored too quickly when they took the lead with 2:41 remaining in the fourth quarter.

And it proved to be the case.

The Greensburg Pirates scored with 10 seconds remaining in the game to pull out a 34-28 victory over the host Bulldogs.

It was smash-mouth football.

Greensburg and Batesville ran over, ran around and outran each other with the Pirates ending up in the end zone last to win the second meeting between the two teams.

Greensburg fullback Chris Denton was the workhorse rushing 32 times for 317 yards and three touchdowns. He was the offense for the Pirates, and was involved in 37 of the Pirates 55 plays – an astonishing 23 of 29 in the second half.

Greensburg coach Scott Moore said Denton used his size and strength.

“He hit some creases because our offensive line did a phenomenal job and he was able to get into their secondary and obviously he has a size factor over them,” Moore said.

But even though Denton ran wild against the Batesville defense, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-0 lead thanks to two Greensburg first-half turnovers.

Greensburg was driving in the first half half, and looked like it was ready to score, but Nick Booker caught a pass and then fumbled at the Batesville 5-yard line.

The Bulldogs then drove 95 yards in 10 plays – the last on a 38-yard run by running back Chris Miller – for the first score.

Miller, who ended the game with14 carries and 115 yard and two TDs, made a quick run past the line and then outran several Pirate defenders.

Denton fumbled the ball on the next play from scrimmage at the Greensburg 26 yard line.

It took the Bulldogs five plays for Ryan Hartman to run four yards for a score. Dosereck’s kick was wide right.

When Batesville couldn’t convert on a fourth and one from the Greensburg 25-yard line, it was the Pirates who used the ground to score 10 plays later. Quarterback Mitch Tuttle ran in from15 yards. Chris Blankman missed the extra point to make the first half score 13-6.

It didn’t take long for Greensburg to tie the score – three plays, with Denton running 63, thee and six yards to score.

But the Bulldogs came back on an 11 play drive with Hartman scoring from nine yards to put Batesville up 20-13.

Tuttle and Denton combined to run six times and go 65 yards with Denton busting through the line and just getting inside the left pylon for a TD to tie it at 20 with 2:15 left in the quarter.

It looked like the Bulldogs would take the lead, but Connor Kelley was intercepted for the second time in the game, with Jacob Powers returning the pick 53 yards to the Batesville 37-yard line.

Six Denton runs later, Greensburg had its first lead at 27-20 with 7:10 left in the game.

But Batesville wasn’t done. Nine plays and 62 yard later, Miller had his second touchdown when he was hit three times but still made it into the end zone from seven yards. Hartman ran over the right side, was hit at the line, but still struggled into the end zone for the two-point conversion.

Batesville was up by one point (28-27) with just 2:41 left.

But Denton wasn’t done. He ran three times for 13 yards, took two plays off, and then ran six times for 36 yards to put the ball at the one-yard line. Tuttle simply pushed the ball over with 10.3 seconds left to give Greensburg a victory.

Tuttle ended the night with 54 yards on 12 carries. He also was two of two passing for 32 yards.

Batesville’s Hartman ran 23 times for 129 yard. Zack Walsh ran seven times for 61 yards.

Greensburg will now host Class 3A top-ranked Indianapolis Chatard in the second round of the sectional tournament.
