Shelbyville advances, helps coach tie program’s career wins mark

After a quick first series, Shelbyville's offense settled down, scored on six straight possessions and overpowered Franklin County 49-7 in the opening round of sectional play Friday at McKeand Stadium in Shelbyville.

David Brown rushed for 109 yards and three touchdowns to help the 12th-ranked Golden Bears (9-1) advance to face No. 11 East Central, a 59-7 winner over Connersville Friday.

"This is exactly where we wanted to be," Shelbyville quarterback Kris Skipton said. "To be the best, you have to beat the best. And East Central and Columbus East are the best right now."

If Shelbyville defeats East Central next week, it would likely set up a sectional championship rematch with top-ranked Columbus East on Nov. 7. The Olympians won the 2007 battle 28-7.

For the second week in a row, the Golden Bears got off to a slow start.

The first series lasted all of 25 seconds. The defense did its job by holding the Wildcats (1-9) to six yards of offense and forcing a punt.

A short pass to Brown turned into a 25-yard gain. Patrick Ellis added 13 more on the next play. Brown sliced through the line of scrimmage for 17. He added another five yards to get the ball to the Franklin County 22.

Ellis gained 19 yards on a sweep. And Skipton crashed into the end zone for the first score of the game.

Franklin County countered with a 17-play drive that ate up almost eight minutes on the clock but put no points on the scoreboard.

Facing fourth-and-16, Forrest Kunkel missed a 34-yard field-goal attempt.

The Wildcats' defense allowed 429 points this season and didn't figure to have much more success against a Golden Bears' offense averaging just over 40 points.

Shelbyville followed with 19-yard scoring run by Brown after Josh Thurman forced a fumble recovered by Brett Durphey.

"That ignited us. That was a big hit ... a big play," Parks said. "We finally started getting some three-and-outs and started taking control on both sides of the ball."

Brown ended a 47-yard drive with a 6-yard scoring run.

And Ellis finished off the Golden Bears' fourth scoring drive of the first half with a two-yard run.

Skipton connected with Kevin Prosch for a 58-yard scoring pass on Shelbyville's first possession of the second half.

Brown tallied his 27th rushing touchdown of the season on a 47-yard run near the midway point of the third quarter.

Franklin County's only score came with just over five minutes left in the game. Dylan Derenski rumbled in from eight yards to make it 42-7.

Reserve running back Dominique Cox finished off the scoring with a 7-yard run in the final minute.

Franklin County's Troy Daugherty led all rushers with 111 yards on 23 carries.

With the victory, Parks tied J.M. McKeand for the most career wins at Shelbyville.

In his 148-game career, Parks has won 74 games and lost 74. McKeand was 74-75-3 in his 21-year career that spanned four decades.

"It's an honor to finally be at this point," Parks said. "It's something that has taken a long time, but it's pretty cool to be here.

"It's all about these young men. They're the ones that got us here. They're the ones that work hard every day for our program and do the right things."

In the other half of the Sectional 15 bracket, Columbus East defeated Seymour 42-14, and Madison shut out South Dearborn 35-0.
