Potential Rule Changes? Coaches Vote
Posted 10/5/2008 11:01:00 AM

Every two years, the state high school tennis coaches are surveyed on potential rules changes.  This year’s survey period recently ended with more than 200 coaches voting.

No decisions on which new rules to propose have been made yet by the leadership of the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association and the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.

But here are some of the results of the survey:

> Eight teams should advance to the IHSAA State Finals instead of four.

      Disagree 48            21.4%
      No opinion 41        18.3%

> Tennis should be a multi-class sport instead of a single-class sport:

      Agree 115              51.3%
      Disagree 90            40.2%
      No opinion 19         8.5%

> On Sundays during the school year, in the authorized contest season, working tennis professionals who are also high school tennis coaches should not be permitted to work with their own players in clinics or private lessons.

> Teams should have a maximum cap of 22 regular-season matches, which includes duals and regular-season tournaments.  As long as there are no more than 16 duals, teams should be allowed to build their schedules with any combination of tournaments and dual meets. (Note: currently, teams must use one of the following formats: 16 duals, 0 tournaments; 14 duals, 2 tournaments; 12 duals, 3 tournaments; or 10 duals, 4 tournaments.)

> Coaches should be allowed to coach their players after every game as long as the 20-second rule between points and/or 90-second changeover rule is not violated.

      Agree 96                42.9%
      Disagree 126          56.3%
