Week 2 Football wrapup
Posted 9/1/2008 9:50:00 PM

Watching scores from Friday night and Saturday, here are some of the notable results of the second week on the Indiana high school gridiron:

Friday (alphabetically by winner)

Ben Davis 35, Penn 27
 - A closer score than I would have predicted, but the result is the same.  Ben Davis goes to 2-0 and Penn is 0-2 for the first time since 1981 (at least that's the stat I've heard).  Things will get interesting for the Giants the next two weeks, going to Lucas Oil Stadium to face North Central, then the showdown at rival Warren Central.

Brebeuf 47, Guerin Catholic 21
 - On the surface it may appear that a 3A handles a 1A team - exactly what you would expect in most cases.  However, don't overlook the improvement Brebeuf has shown in their 14 games under head coach Ryan Gallogly (11-3 since his arrival, the school had just two winning seasons in the seven prior).  Guerin Catholic shouldn't exactly be a slouch, either.

Carmel 52, Lebanon 0
 - Last weekend while watching the Carmel-Cathedral game, I kidded my former high school teacher Kent Wright that taking his Lebanon Tigers to Carmel must have been some sort of death wish.  All joking aside, Carmel suffered no letdown after the much ballyhooed season opener against Cathedral - and you wouldn't expect a Mo Moriarity led team to do so.

Center Grove 55, Perry Meridian 14
 - The Trojans have opened the season outscoring their opponents 96-14.  Not too bad.  In the pursuit of a MIC championship - and therefore being tabbed the front-runner to win the 5A state title - CG will host Carmel this week in what has become a huge rivalry.

Columbus East 35, Columbus North 3
 - You couldn't have reached this blog without seeing the results on our front page (another wonderful webcast Game of the Week, with just a bit of rain dampening the evening at North).  Another great atmosphere with some top-notch talent.  Of course the score tells you who has the better - or at least more dynamic - talent.  East can win 4A this year and made a statement by beating a 5A Top Ten team in their rivalry game.

Concord 57, Elkhart Memorial 32
 - Not to be overlooked in the talk of Cathedral and Columbus East as 4A front-runners is another 'C' - Concord.  Putting up 57 points will start to generate that talk.  Remember, the last time they had an offense this prolific they found themselves playing at the RCA Dome on Thanksgiving weekend in 2006.

Forest Park 53, Princeton 17
 - Forest Park gets their first ever varsity football win.  Congrats, I'm sure all of the hard work in the season and summer leading up to it paid off for that feeling.

Fort Wayne Dwenger 24, Harding 12
 - A battle of ranked teams in the Summit City goes the way of the 4A Saints.  Just one of many Fort Wayne matchups that will be important this season.

Hamilton Southeastern 24, Fishers 17
 - In a blog entry I wrote last week that disappeared before I could save and publish it (sometimes technology is more frustrating than convenient!), I warned that this would be a big game and not just for the rivalry factor.   Consider the fact that Fishers H.S. was carved out of HSE’s district and remains under the same school corporation, and you’ve got great grounds for a rivalry.  But the hiring of Rick Wimmer was a great move for Fishers, who in their third season should be plenty good.  Honestly, this game was even closer than I would have thought, but I will tout that Fishers is a team that will surprise many people this season, despite heavy losses from last year’s offense.  After going from 1-10 to 6-4 between seasons one and two, I could easily see a 7-2 regular season for the Tigers with who knows what possible in the postseason.

Heritage Christian 27, Triton Central 0
 - A rivalry intensified last season when Triton Central handed the Eagles their lone regular season loss, then Heritage Christian punished the Tigers on the way to a 2A state championship game appearance.  This year, Heritage Christian is clearly the class of this matchup.

Heritage Hills 48, Tell City 6
 - Heritage Hills has outscored their opponent 82-6 through the first two weeks.  Start talk of the seemingly annual Chatard – Heritage Hills meeting in the 3A South semistate.  (For the record, they’ve met 6 of the last 7 postseasons)

Roncalli 30, Franklin Central 7
 - After a 3-7 record last season and rumblings that Roncalli still isn’t as strong as usual, they’ve opened up with two victories.  Franklin Central is in the midst of a program turnover (loss of some big players and a coaching change), and will have some tough battles still ahead of them.

Jimtown 14, John Glenn 7
 - The Jimmies get their first win of the season while keeping the score low.

Lafayette Jeff 37, Harrison (WL) 30
 - The Bronchos get the win in an exciting contest.  It seems very likely Jeff would take a 4-0 record into a showdown later this month with Hoosier Crossroads Conference foe Hamilton Southeastern.

Lapel 26, Frankton 7
 - An intra-corporation battle always makes for intensity and Lapel is off to just their third 2-0 start in the last dozen years (although it is their third time in the last four seasons).

Lawrence Central 28, North Central 16
 - A week after beating township rival Lawrence North, the  Lawrence Central Bears beat neighboring North Central, another MIC team.  A win against Perry Meridian this week would make them 3-0 and match the Bears’ win totals of each of the last two seasons.

Merrillville 24, Griffith 15
 - Against one of the better 4A squads, Merrillville comes out a winner.  Griffith gets credit for hanging with the Pirates.

Mooresville 72, Indianapolis Manual 6
 - For a team that lost 21 of 22 starters from last season, 72 points by Mooresville is quite an impressive feat.

Muncie South 35, Muncie Central 12
 - Last season South put up 60 points on their in-town rival, but it’s still a big win this year.

North Decatur 13, Edinburgh 12
 - The story is not so much North Decatur’s win as it is that Edinburgh, who hasn’t won a game other than by forfeit since October 2002, loses by just one point. Hopefully a victory is just around the corner for the Lancers.

NorthWood 14, Culver Academy 6
 - The Panthers go to 2-0 with a win over another strong northern Indiana squad.

Pike 39, Decatur Central 7
 - Confession time: I didn’t think Pike would be this strong this season, but I was way off.  They’re legit again this year.  Derek Moyers is doing a tremendous job on the northwest side of Indianapolis.

Rockville 59, Covington 0
 - Last year’s 1A runners-up are off to a great start this season.  The Rox have scored 104 points in two wins.

Seymour 28, Jeffersonville 20
 - Jeffersonville, who began the season rated #12 in the 5A coaches’ poll, is now 0-2 after a one-point loss to Evansville Reitz and this Hoosier Hills Conference loss to Seymour.

Shelbyville 40, Rushville 6
 - Not because my alma mater took a beating, but because Shelbyville continues to impress.  The Golden Bears have put up at least 35 points in the first two games and are giving up 11.

Sheridan 29, Hamilton Heights 13
 - The streak continues – 38 straight wins for the Sheridan Blackhawks.

Southport 43, Anderson 9
 - Congratulations to the Cardinals and coach Bill Peebles.  A program with just three wins in their last four seasons, they are a deserving group and hopefully have a few more W’s in them this season.

Southridge 27, Jasper 21
 - Probably the best matchup in southern Indiana for the weekend, Southridge gets off to the 2-0 start to the season.  They could get some steam rolling before their October 3 game hosting Heritage Hills.

Speedway 42, Greencastle 6
 - Speedway, in my mind a team perennially overlooked because of bigger schools in Indianapolis, gets the 249th win of Denny Pelley’s career.  Beech Grove is next on the schedule.

Valparaiso 57, Gary Roosevelt 0
 - The team that beat Penn last week overpowers Roosevelt.

West Lafayette 27, Lewis Cass 20
 - Two ranked teams in their respective classes put on what the score would indicate was a good game.

Saturday

Cathedral 34, Canton McKinley (Ohio) 13
 - Some of Indiana’s best football beats up on an Ohio team in Ohio.

Chatard 31, Lexington Catholic (Ky.) 7
 - Some of Indiana’s best football beats up on some of Kentucky’s best in Kentucky.

Warren Central 39, Middletown (Ohio) 35
 - Another of Indiana’s top teams wins in Ohio, marking another literal and moral win for Indiana over the pride (and in some instances arrogance) of Ohio football.

Congrats Indiana football.
