Football Kicks Off on a Grand Stage

This past weekend, I had the privilege to attend the annual Peyback
Classic and Marsh Invitational high school football games at the new
Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.  How fitting that the first events in
this new state-of-the-art facility were high school contests.  Both
events did a terrific job showcasing high school football in Indiana!
In total, six games featuring twelve different teams...all played in the
newest, biggest, grandest stage of all...Lucas Oil Stadium.  The
attendance and support from the community was remarkable with both
events drawing in excess of 30,000 spectators from their local
communities.  For the majority of the kids who play high school sports,
this was the biggest athletic stage they'll ever compete on, and they
should receive everything they are due for their participation.

On Saturday, just up the road in Carmel, the defending class 5A champion
Greyhounds hosted Cathedral in a nationally televised game on ESPN.
This was just one of three nationally televised high school football
games on ESPN this year.  The national interest certainly speaks to the
strides high football in Indiana has made over the years.

In total, I watched the better part of seven different football games
this past weekend.  One might normally see that many games around the
Thanksgiving holiday but in mid-August?  The first week of the high
school football season?  I do have to admit that being a former football
coach certainly attributed to my desire to garner as much pigskin as
possible in a single weekend.  The only time more exciting than the
first week of the season is just after the leaves begin to fall and the
annual tournament begins.

Take a moment to support high school sports in your community.  One
means of providing this support is to attend their high school games,
meets, and matches.  The wholesome values and ideals present in the high
school sports program sponsored by the school in your community will
provide you with entertainment and make you proud.

Pure, wholesome, amateur, educational, inexpensive, local high school
athletics have always been the objective.  It is what we mean when we
say...Pure Spirit.  Pure Sport!

When will the IHSAA give further action/consideration regarding classes and private schools. It is my belief that whatever class they normally qualify for, they should be moved up one class due to the recruiting measures taken by private schools. Its creates an unfair advantage. It has been a common problem for years and officials have always looked the other way. It's time someone dealt with it fairly.
