6/6/2009

Members of the IHSAA Executive Committee announced Ben Stancombe of Bloomington South High School as the winner of this year’s Robert S. Hinshaw Mental Attitude Award in Boys Track and Field.

Stancombe finished second in shot put and sixth in discus in this year’s state finals.  Stancombe was also a four year letter winner in football for the Panthers.  He placed fifth in the Hammer Throw Championships for the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics in 2007 and he holds the school’s shot put record with a distance of 60-4.

Academically, he is ranked 52nd in his class of 365 and scored an impressive 1740 on the SAT.  Ben is a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Campus Life, and is a Bloomington South Cadet teacher.  He has received the Principal’s Scholar Award, President’s Award for Educational Excellence, Donald Childs Medal Award, National Scholars Award, and the Conference Indiana Academic Award.

Stancomb will attend the University of Iowa on a track and field athletic scholarship.  Ben is the son of Brian and Beth Stancombe of Bloomington.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the proud corporate partner of all IHSAA tournaments, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Bloomington South in Stancombe’s name.
