Even after winning Friday night's meet at Decatur Central, the Avon boys track and field team posted several strong individual and relay finishes at Saturday's Ben Davis Relays.

Among them: the 3,200-meter relay and distance medley relay teams, both of which won Saturday -- with the 3,200 squad edging Center Grove by four-tenths of a second. Chris Surfus took second in the 3,200 run.

"Our distance kids did real well," said coach Dave Teany.

He said he ran his sprinters hard the night before (Marvis Herring set a school record of 49.17 seconds in the 400), which limited their effectiveness Saturday.

But the distance participants weren't the only standouts at Ben Davis.

Kyle McDaniel posted the top discus distance (143 feet, 10 inches) and the second longest shot put toss (53-6). Shayne Cureton took second in long jump while setting a school record (21-91/2) and tied for second in high jump at 6-4.

Overall, Avon took fourth out of seven teams (behind No. 1 Ben Davis, then-No. 15 Valparaiso and No. 9 Center Grove). Teany said his team's "big four" meets start Tuesday at the Hendricks County contest (the other three are conference, sectional and regional).

Now is the time to get better, he said.

"We want to peak at the end of the season," he said, "and we aim everything toward developing team depth."
