ADAM SUMRALL NAMED KEESLING MENTAL ATTITUDE WINNER

6/19/2009

Following the tournament, Mishawaka Marian senior Adam Sumrall was selected as the winner of the Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award by members of the IHSAA Executive Committee.

The Committee presents the award to the outstanding senior participant during the state finals each year. The recipient of the award, who was nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in boys golf. This award is named in honor of the late Fred A. Keesling, the longtime director of the IHSAA Boys Golf Tournament.

Sumrall won this year’s state tournament with a two-day score of 140 (74-76) (-6) and became the second Marian golfer to win the award following Cole Isban in 2003, who also won the state tournament. Sumrall was the 2007 state runner-up as a sophomore.

Besides golf, he played basketball for the Knights for four years earning three letters and leading the team in scoring for two seasons and also lettered in tennis last fall.

Academically, Sumrall graduated with a 4.34 GPA on a 4.0 scale ranking 11th in his class of 191 students. He has been a member of the National Honor Society where he was the vice president this year. He will attend Duke University in the fall where he plans to study business and play golf.

He is the son of Peter and Sue Sumrall of South Bend.

Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA’s partner, presented a scholarship check for $1,000.00 to Mishawaka Marian High School in the name of Sumrall.  Since 1989, more than $630,000 in college scholarships has been presented by Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.
