Lafayette Central Catholic (28-4) scored 14-runs in the
first four innings against Vincennes Rivet en-route to winning its third Class
A state title in five appearances. The Knights beat the heavy underdog
Patriots by a score of 14-1.
Taylor
Glaze struck out seven Patriots in the first three innings and ended hopes of a
story book ending to an improbable state tournament run for Rivet (16-12). Glaze had 9 K's overall in five innings.
Vincennes
Rivet starting pitcher Spencer Wirth relinquished 11 runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3
innings of work. Wirth hit four Lafayette Central Catholic batters, and walked
three, putting the Knights lead-off man on base in all four inning that he
started.
"You cant say enough about our ability
to get on base," LCC Head Coach Tim Bordenot said. "We have hit the
ball around, but also done the smaller things."
LCC
set a state record for runs in the fourth inning as the 14th run
crossed the plate. The state championship game is the only game (softball or
baseball) that does not honor the mercy rule (a 10 plus run lead through five
innings).
“Everything
about this team is special,” Bordenot said. “We have just been so
balanced all year and only good things can come from that.”
Derek Potter had the lone hit for
Vincennes Rivet in a third inning that saw the Patriots load the bases on a
Potter single, a hit batsmen and a walk. Glaze struck out the side to get out
of the jam.
Second Baseman Reed
Drysdale and shortstop Dru Anthrop each went 2-4 with three RBI's
helping the Knights to 14 runs on 14 hits for the ballgame.
In a state title run that saw that
saw LCC outscore its opponents 66-6, it was the Knights offensive and defensive
balance that allowed them to dominate.
“We hit the ball, had great
pitching, and great defense,” Bordenot said. “We stayed within ourselves and
focused from the first game to the last.”
Anthrop, a senior, won
the mental attitude award, becoming the first Knight to do so sine 2002.
