Indy Star
Star report
New Broad Ripple High School baseball coach Herb Teal quickly discovered just how much attitudes toward the sport have changed in Indianapolis Public Schools in three decades:
None of his players had cleats for the first day of practice.
"The opportunities for African-American kids (in baseball) are slim," said Teal, 51, who bought cleated shoes for his 15 varsity players. "It saddens me because there's no inner-city Little League like when I was growing up. Back then, you couldn't wait to play against your buddy from down the street."
Teal, who is African-American, graduated from Arlington in 1977 and played in the minor league systems for five major league teams. He is assisted by Rodney Scott, who was drafted out of Arlington in 1972 by the Kansas City Royals and had an eight-year major league career.
Broad Ripple won the Indianapolis Public Schools Athletic Conference championship in 2007 but didn't win a game last season, according to Teal.
