Following the meet, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee selected Jessica Hammes of Carmel High School as this year’s winner of the Mental Attitude Award in girls swimming and diving.
The award is presented annually to a senior, nominated by her principal and coach, who demonstrates excellence in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability.
Jessica served as team captain of this season’s state championship team, and was part of two state meet and national record-setting relay teams – the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. She also won the 100 backstroke state title and placed second in the 100 butterfly.
She is a two year NCAA Stay in Bounds Ambassador, has served her community as a four-year youth liturgy lector at church, and is a Relay for Life participant for the American Cancer Society. She organized and led the first Carmel Swim Club Holiday Food Drive for Hamilton County, is a Carmel Swim Club camp volunteer and has been a member of the Carmel Swim Club all four years of high school.
Hammes has a GPA of 4.14 on a 4.0 scale. She plans on swimming for Stanford University next fall, majoring in human biology.
Carmel Principal, John Williams commented, “Jessica displays sportsmanship in the pool against all competitors and truly believes in the philosophy of hard work and respect. Jessica wrote a reflective paper for a class earlier this year and said, ‘All the gold medals in the world are meaningless if you don’t know how to treat others with respect.’”
She is the daughter of Gregory and Deborah Hammes.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, presented Carmel High School with a $1,000 scholarship in the name of Hammes.
