The goal was to reach 90 points.

Unfortunately for the Martinsville High School gymnastics team, the Artesians came up less than a point short at the Columbus East sectional on Saturday.

The Artesians came in eighth of nine teams in a sectional that included five schools in the state’s top-20.

The Artesians scored 89.225, ahead of Seymour’s 83.825 but behind Bloomington North’s 94.75. Columbus North won with 111.75 points and Columbus East (105.35) and Bloomington South (103.45) also advanced to the Columbus East regionals on Saturday.

Martinsville was finally healthy enough by the end of the season to field four competitors in each event, something the Artesians had been unable to do for much of the season because of numerous injuries.

Presli Collier scored a team-best in two events — the floor exercise (8.05) and uneven parallel bars (7.25)

In the floor exercise, she was followed by Katie Schnaiter (7.425), McKenzie Smith (7.25) and Samantha Reynolds (7.05). Chrissy Day of Columbus North won the event by scoring 9.45, followed by the Bulldogs’ Chelsea Stretshberry (9.30).

Reynolds (6.65), Justine Jack (6.60) and Schnaiter (6.10) also competed in the parallel bars for the Artesians, which was won by Columbus North’s Cassie Funcheon (9.70).

Jack scored 8.85 on the vault, followed by Smith (8.25), Collier (8.2) and Reynolds (8.0). Columbus North’s Day and Center Grove’s Katelyn Fernandes tied in that event with a 9.7 score.

Smith scored the best for Martinsville in the balance beam scoring 7.575. Schnaiter scored 6.6, followed by Collier (6.525) and Reynolds (5.95). Jeffersonville’s Ashley Gallahar won the event with a 9.225 score, followed by Audrey Lewis of Columbus North (9.075).

Collier scored 30.025 in the all-around, which was won by Columbus North’s Day (37.8). Allison Franklin of Columbus East came in second with 37 points.

Center Grove finished in fifth as a team (101.875), Jeffersonville (98.225) and Owen Valley (94.925).
