Mountie gymnasts head into Saturday shorthanded

Southmont’s gymnastics team will face adversity headed into the Harrison Sectional for the second consecutive year.

Last year, it was senior Sam Williams’ injury the Mounties had to overcome. This year, the problem deals with academics.

Three Mounties have been ruled academically ineligible for Saturday’s sectional. Included in that group are freshman Kara Price and junior Alex Zachary. Zachary advanced to regionals in the floor exercise last year.
“Those are two big losses,” Southmont coach Aimee Zachary said. “Alex qualified for regionals last year and Kara had an excellent chance of getting out on the beam.

“This is just part of life and hopefully they will learn from this and it won’t happen again. We are just going to do the best we can with the gymnasts we have and hopefully will be better and stronger next year.”
