Tough draw for Lakeshore

A new seeding format for the state wrestling elite eight did Lakeshore no favors.

The Lancers are seeded No. 3 for Friday's 7:45 p.m. quarterfinals at Kellogg Arena.

But only the top four teams are seeded with a blind draw of the other four teams for quarterfinal opponents. And Bruce Bittenbender's team (29-6) drew the top team of the unseeded four, 34-1 Dearborn Heights Annapolis.

"Our schedule was so much tougher than theirs and I think that's why we were seeded," Bittenbender said. "But Annapolis is a pretty good team. It's probably the worst draw we could've gotten."

The Cougars qualified eight wrestlers for the individual state finals, two more than Lakeshore.

Both teams are strong in many of the same areas. Annapolis has Noel Guevara (47-8) at 112 and Lakeshore has Tyler Frese (49-4). The Cougars boast Ruben Guevara (41-13) at 140 and Lakeshore has Nick Humes (48-3). And Annapolis has Michael Hotvedt (51-4) at 171 and the Lancers sport Tim Newman (39-7).

"It's probably going to come down to 189, 215 and 285, where neither of us has state qualifiers," Bittenbender said. "Other than that, we're pretty even."

Lakeshore's other state qualifiers are Tyler Daniels (52-1 at 103), Brett Glaske (34-9 at 112) and Tyler Humes (50-6 at 160).

The other quarterfinal pairings find No. 1-seeded Lowell (32-4) facing Hazel Park (36-5), No. 2-seeded Oxford (35-2) taking on Byron Center (31-5) and No. 4-seeded St. John's (27-2) meeting Eaton Rapids (32-12).

Friday's winners will collide in the state semifinals at 11:45 a.m. Saturday with the state championship match scheduled for 4 p.m.
