What a wonderful time of the year, especially for sports fans.
We’ve just come off of the IHSAA football state finals, which set attendance records with 56,050 at Lucas Oil Stadium over the two days. All five of the championship games were close with the 14-point difference in the 3A game the largest margin of victory, and of course the conclusion of the 5A championship game between Center Grove and Carmel was remarkable with Center Grove’s 22-point rally to beat the Greyhounds 36-33.
Some thoughts from the games I was able to watch:
What a tough, physical game between Fort Wayne Dwenger and Cathedral in the 4A contest – exactly what was expected. These are two schools that are known for their success in football and known for being tough teams. Congratulations to the Irish for their win and congratulations to the Saints for an undefeated regular season making it ...

It was another interesting week of Indiana high school football. Check out some of the notable happenings from
around the state.
Beech Grove 41, Crawfordsville 28
The Hornets put up big numbers in a win against a 3-1
Crawfordsville team.
Ben Davis 26, Terre
Haute North 17
The Giants, a week after a 21-point loss to rival Warren
Central, get their 2nd MIC win.
Carmel 27, Lawrence North 6
The #1 Greyhounds continue a perfect season with the
conference win.
Chesterton 12, Valparaiso
10
The Trojans hand Valpo their first loss of the season,
meaning each squad is 4-1.
Cloverdale 32, Cascade 20
Not notable to mainstream fans, but notable for the fact
that Cascade scored their first points of the season in this loss.
Columbus East 42, New Albany 14
The 4A #1 Olympians are still unbeaten – and are now the
only team unbeaten in ...

Call it a week of offense – there were a number of blowouts
and a total of 20 teams scored 55 or more points in Week 4… Here are my
thoughts and comments on selected games from around the state.
The attention grabbers:
Jasper 18, Heritage Hills 0
What??? This is just the 2nd regular season loss
in the last 10 years for the Patriots. Since
1994 Heritage Hills is 122-4 in the regular season. Congratulations to Jasper.
Lawrence
Central 28, Pike 21
The run continues for LC, while it’s a losing streak for
Pike. The Bears are one of the biggest
surprises in the state at 4-0, while the Red Devils lose their second straight
for a 2-2 mark.
Bloomington South 69, Bloomington North 41
Wow, what a game this must have been. The Panthers have been scoring in bunches
this year – ...

Here is a look at notable scores from the third week of Indiana high school football:
Carmel 33, Center Grove
32
A bounce of the ball – literally – makes a big difference in this major
showdown. A reverse of last year’s
meeting as this time it’s Carmel going for – and converting – a two-point
conversion in the final minutes to make the difference.
Castle 24, Evansville
Central 23
A matchup of previously unbeatens in Evansville.
Cincinnati St. Xavier
(Ohio) 17, Cathedral 3
The Irish may be 1-2, but losses to nationally ranked Carmel and St. X will
have them tested for anything for the rest of the season. Do not be shocked if they win out.
Columbus East 44, Seymour
14
The Olympians, ranked #1 in 4A, get a jump on their Hoosier Hills Conference
schedule.
Columbus North 35,
Bloomington North 28
Any game pitting brothers ...

Watching scores from
Friday night and Saturday, here are some of the notable results of the second
week on the Indiana high school gridiron:
Friday (alphabetically by winner)
Ben Davis 35, Penn 27
- A closer score than I would have predicted, but the result is the
same. Ben Davis goes to 2-0 and Penn is 0-2 for the first time since 1981
(at least that's the stat I've heard). Things will get interesting for
the Giants the next two weeks, going to Lucas Oil Stadium to face North
Central, then the showdown at rival Warren Central.
Brebeuf 47, Guerin Catholic 21
- On the surface it may appear that a 3A handles a 1A team - exactly what
you would expect in most cases. However, don't overlook the improvement
Brebeuf has shown in their 14 games under head coach Ryan Gallogly (11-3 since
his arrival, the school had just ...
